10 QUESTIONS WITH MAT BELCHER

04 May 2015

Kicking off Nautica's “Ten Questions with The Australian Sailing Team” series is Olympic Gold Medallist Mathew Belcher, who kindly opened up about his role models, most treasured possession, and what’s next for 2015.

1. How would your friends describe you in three words?
Dedicated, caring and persistent.

2. Who’s your role model or has had the biggest influence on your life?
There have been a lot of people who have impacted my sailing career and have played a large part of helping me develop. There’s too many to mention, but obviously my family and wife have been a huge part. My role model over the years would have to be Victor Kovalenko (the Australian Sailing Team’s Head Coach).

3. What are some essential skills a good sailor needs?
Patience, good communication skills, strong critical thinking, the ability to handle pressure in a changing environment and work with others from various backgrounds.

4. Nautica supplies the official off-water uniform for the Sailing Team. What’s your favourite piece to throw on, and why?
I really like the new fleece jumpers – they’re quite homely, very warm, with nice soft material. It helps me feel cozy on those cold, windy days.

5. What’s your most treasured possession?
My Olympic Gold Medal from London 2012.

6. What’s an album or song that you’d happily play on repeat?
At the moment it’s “Let It Go” from James Bay.

7. What’s one thing people should do when they visit your hometown, the Gold Coast?
Go to the beach for a swim or surf.

8. We know AST athletes are super healthy – but spill! What’s your guilty food pleasure?
Pancakes, every Sunday!

9. We’ve just released our new AW15 collection. If you could have anything from the range, what would you choose?
I’d go for the Long Sleeve Trim Strip Hoodie.

10. Finally, what’s on the horizon for 2015?
We have a busy year traveling and competing around the world to continue our preparations towards Rio 2016.
